Scottish Sports Horse placed at the World Cup Final Geneve
A fantastic result for the SSH registered ten year old gelding "Hallmark Elite" by Lord Byron out of "Easy Touch formely HerMajesty (Renville x Rigoletto) who placed fifth in the World Cup final at the Palexpo, Geneve, Switzerland. "Hallmark Elite" was bred by former SSH Chairman John Mansfield at his farm in Dunlop, Ayrshire, produced at home and later sold on and is now ridden by Irish Rider Dermott Lennon.
The dam of this successful performer "Easy Touch" was herself a competitor in the World Cup Qualifiers and a winner of Grand Prixs, competed by daughter Holly she jumped at Wembley, HOYS, in 1996, Hickstead 1997, Wembley, HOYS, 1997 , belguim, 1997 and Balmoral CSI 1997 prior to retiring to stud. Sadly Easy Touch died whilst foaling but has also produced David Quigleys six year old by Baloubet and "Touch Of Blue" by John's own SSH stallion "Out Of The Blue".
Hallmark Elite was also on the Irish Nations Cup team in Dubai earlier this year and jumped around the Nations Cup class in Spruce Meadows last year picking up only a single time fault. He was also winner of the Dublin Stakes at the 5 star Dublin Horse Show last year.
As a result of his continued success Halmark Elite finished in 128th place in the WBFSH showjumping rankings.
Regrettably the Scottish Sports Horse has chosen to postpone the stallion grading until the autumn of 2010 due to a lack of entries. The 2010 stallion grading will now be held at the same time as the mare & young stock gradings in September as opposed to a stand-alone event this spring and may well do so in future years until such times as the economy improves.
British Breeders and stallion owners have in fact welcomed the SSH’s decision, feedback from whom confirms that there simply aren’t the surplus funds available to invest in producing and presenting a colt in light of the economic crisis at present. Harsh winter weather conditions has also had an adverse affect, setting back the training of many young colts for those with only outdoors facilities.
In addition fewer colts have been purchased as potential stallion prospects in 2008 and 2009 and it appears that a number of stallion owners have made the decision to geld many border line candidates rather than taking the financial risk of investing further. This can only be seen as a positive step forwards for British Sports Horse breeding.
Whilst the Scottish Sports Horse recognise that the costs borne on stallion owners to present a stallion for grading are exceedingly high, (in the region of £500 for a full set of 22 x-rays and an entry fee of £240 including vetting and DNA testing) the SSH stand by the decision that the introduction of x-rays was the right one to make if they are to maintain high standards within the stud book.

MARK TODD IS BACK IN TOWN
Thursday March 4th at Gleneagles 7pm - Balcormo Stud, BHS Scotland and Horse First have joined forces to run a demo - which originated 25 years ago at Balcormo - with the world class rider Mark Todd.
"When I asked Mark Todd 25 years ago to do a demo whilst at Balcormo teaching he agreed. When I asked him what to call it he said ` Oh You will think of something`. I decided then to have him talk about what he would look for - good and bad - when going shopping for a horse."
An interesting and entertaining evening finished with him buying a nice 4 year old belonging to my uncle. He named it "Joint Venture" and it went on to do well - firstly eventing - but after injury - in pure dressage.
25 years later we are doing a re run of this event. Only this time - we have hired Gleneagles and hope to have a much bigger audience than we did at home in 1985!
This time we have tried to produce homebred Scottish Sport horses to provide a showcase for our stock. Some of them are going to be very green having never been far from home.
We took 6 to an intro show at Kingsbarns recently and all went well - but HEY HO - what happens on the night happens!!
So - come along and have a look and learn what this master horseman who has not only won two Olympic Gold medals and one Bronze for eventing - but also represented his country in Olympic Showjumping on two occasions and then hung up his boots from competition to become a very successful racehorse trainer.
Climbing up to the top of this job - he had an offer of another stab at Olympic Gold. Finishing 17th in Hong Kong he then retained the hunger for riding at that level and is heading a serious campaign for 2012 in London.
I am not sure that we have one with enough mileage to be in London with him - but there are a few very talented horses in this bunch who could go a long long way in competition.
There are also a nice mixture of other young horses to suit different levels of riders to do all different disciplines. Its not all about eventing - so - come and have a look and a listen. Tickets available from BHS Scotland or from us here at Balcormo.
